If you are in a dilemma as to which type of translation is more suitable for your situation, this post will help you to see their key differences, and to make an appropriate choice based on this knowledge.

Consecutive translation

Based on the definition of the word consecutive, whose literal meaning is following, i.e. a series of one after the other, the essence of this method of oral translation can be seen. A consecutive interpreter listens to what the speaker is saying and translates the message into the other language after the speaker pauses after each speech, giving the interpreter time to say the translation. This has many advantages, primarily because it gives the translator the ability to accurately and fluently convey the original message, relying solely on his own memory and notes.

The main advantages of consecutive translation are that the translator is always in close proximity to the speaker, which gives him more freedom and the translation is stylistically of better quality, there are no costs for hiring equipment and it is much simpler in terms of organization, while the disadvantages are that it cannot be practiced at events with multiple languages, the translation is generally shorter than the original and some information can be lost, the presentation of the speaker is not continuous, which is why the total time of the event can be significantly extended or even doubled. This is why consecutive interpreting is the best solution for small groups or one-on-one conversations, and is most often used at personal business meetings, working dinners, meetings of heads of state and visits of foreign delegations, at court hearings or during criminal investigations, etc.

Simultaneous interpreting

Simultaneous interpreting, also known as conference interpreting, is a type of interpreting in which the speech is translated in real time almost simultaneously with the presentation of the speaker, with a delay of perhaps only a few seconds. At the professional level, this process most often takes place in the translation booth, where the interpreters have at their disposal appropriate equipment for simultaneous interpreting and other necessary technical resources that provide them with autonomy in relation to other participants in the event. Simultaneous interpreters usually work in pairs, which allows them to work in blocks, i.e. shifts and breaks every 20-30 minutes.

The main advantage of simultaneous interpreting is saving time during the event because the speaker does not have to interrupt the speech, while the listener receives information in real time and can choose between different languages, also the listener’s attention is not disturbed by the ambient noise filtered by the headphones. In addition, this is an almost word-for-word translation, so that more or less important data is not lost, as usually happens with consecutive translation.

Important recommendations

The quality of the interpretation does not depend only and exclusively on the ability of the interpreters, but there are also numerous other factors that the organizer himself can influence. So, if you are preparing an event that requires interpreting services, don’t forget to reserve interpreters in advance because most of the quality interpreters are booked months in advance, and the same applies to equipment and technical support. Once the interpreters have confirmed the date, provide them with all relevant information regarding the topic and content of the event, as an essential part of the interpreter’s preparation is a glossary of terms that will be used at the event. This will greatly help in the preparation of the interpreters and certainly save time for both parties.

The organization of various events with participants who speak different languages inevitably imposes the need for oral translation, which, depending on the dynamics of the event and the circumstances in which it takes place, can be […]

[1

post-942","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-portfolio
["GET
